Traffic lights possible for dangerous intersection „„ By Andrew King A DANGEROUS Harewood intersection that is avoided by residents and people who work in the area could have traffic lights installed at it sooner rather than later. The Breens, Gardiners and Harewood Rds intersection has been a serious concern for residents and parents whose children need to cross it to get to school. At a recent FendaltonWaimairi Community Board meeting a city council traffic engineer said they are working behind the scenes to bring forward a proposal to install traffic lights. It all comes down to finding the money to do it, according to board deputy chairman David Cartwright (left). “We have been told we can expect a solution to the problem in the next two months, he said. Mr Cartwright said he questioned a report given to the board that said: “There are no current plans for upgrading the intersection. “We said this is a real concern

PRIORITY: City council traffic staff are looking at how improvements can be made to the Harewood, Breens and Gardiners Rds intersection sooner rather than later. (Below): City council staff have visited nearby schools to advise them on a safe spot to cross by the intersection. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN to the community so we need to find a solution, he said. Mr Cartwright said he trusted that staff will work hard to put the community’s collective minds at rest. Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown said he will start a petition to show the city council just how many residents are affected by the intersection. “I have received more correspondence on this issue than any other in my nine years of working as a city councillor and as a community board

member, he said. It is the second intersection near Breens Intermediate to come under fire from residents. Bishopdale residents have asked the city council to build a pedestrian island in the middle of busy Farrington Ave, near where it intersects with Wairakei Rd to assist students negotiating the traffic. The city council has said there are no plans to make further safety changes to the intersection – but has agreed to listen to community concerns.

I’M A little too long in the tooth to remember watching The Little Mermaid movie, but I do like the sound of the adaptation, starring former Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Rebekah Head. It is not based on the Disney classic but on the Maori story of Pania of the Reef and the exploits of her grand-daughter PJ. It is on from tomorrow at The Court Theatre – see more on pages 10 and 11. Then check out page 5 to see which hopeful has changed the area they are running in for the local body elections. We would love to see your photos of kids having fun. It could be at school holiday programmes or out and about. Send them through to andrew.king@ starmedia.kiwi and they may even be published. Hei kona – Shelley Robinson

News Permanent site for camera By Andrew King A TEMPORARY camera championed by city councillor Ali Jones has prompted a permanent one to be installed in St Albans. Two new high-definition security cameras were installed last week on the corner of Manchester and Purchas Sts to deter anti-social behaviour. It comes after Cr Jones suggested a temporary one, in an attempt to solve ongoing issues between sex workers and residents. It was installed in May. The new security camera is being paid for and maintained by the city council. However, Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown (left) said while it gives sex workers a safe spot to stand, it has been put in the wrong place. “It is a double-edged sword. Because of recent events the girls have been looking for a safer spot to stand, and right underneath this camera is

Sex worker Renee Duckmanton, who was last seen on Manchester St, was allegedly murdered in May. Mr Keown believes it is a good start but more cameras were needed in the city centre to provide sex workers the safety they deserve while moving them out of residential areas. “The next step is more

cameras and more toilets for those who work in this industry,” he said. Police had were consulted by the city council to find the best place to install the camera, they will also have access to the footage. The camera will go live in the next two weeks. Your Local Views Time for a fairer distribution of wealth St Albans Uniting Parish minister Reverend Hugh Perry writes this week’s opinion piece about the growing gap between the rich and poor and ‘blame game’ that follows it. AS THE minister of St Albans Uniting Parish my concern is very much focused on the wellbeing of people and that is influenced by the world we live in as much as our immediate neighbourhood Statistics New Zealand’s recently reported that the wealth share of individuals shows the top 10 per cent of people have almost 60 per cent of wealth and the bottom 40 per cent of households hold just 3 per cent. In his 1970 book Future Shock Alvin Toffler said that new technologies would free humanity from

dangerous and dehumanising work but the real challenge will be to fairly distribute the wealth technology produces. Clearly Toffler’s predictions about new technology have been proved correct. But Statistics New Zealand percentages show we have failed to fairly distribute the wealth produced. We seem to compensate for this failure by blaming the poor, particularly the unemployed, for their plight. But in this world of robots and rapid worldwide communication there are a whole host of jobs that no longer exist and people are urged to retrain. I come across people who have and spent years retraining only to find they can’t get a job because they

have no experience. I have met others who because of accident or other reasons are too slow in even menial tasks to be employed. The ultimate insult in the blame game, however, seems to be the practice of putting a homeless family in a motel while they wait for a suitable house then debiting their benefit to pay back the cost and therefore making them less able to pay rent. Isn’t it time we took up Toffler’s 1970 challenge of a fairer distribution of the wealth our new technologies produce. Certainly that is a huge challenge but perhaps the first step is to care and show compassion. •Do we as a society look down on the less fortunate to a point where it is too hard for them to get off the bottom rung? Readers respond to a recent article about the city council not planning on upgrading the intersection of Breens, Gardiners and Harewood Rds in Bishopdale. They say: Sara Howes, of Bishopdale – I have just read the article in the Nor’West News. I can’t believe it. What time of the day did city council staff observe this intersection? As a resident of Gardiners Rd and therefore a regular user of the intersection at peak time it is diabolical and that’s being polite. Daily at peak time, people just charge straight through the intersection from the Breens Rd side failing to give way or either end up sitting in the middle of the road. It is out of control. I’ve even witnessed a GoBus doing this exact thing. The city council needs to step up and spend ratepayers money wisely, they put lights at the Sawyers Arms and Gardiners

Rds intersection and that had a lesser accident rate. Donna McLachlan, of Bishopdale – The results to this intersection problem are outrageous. Does someone have to die before things change? Traffic is the problem, people don’t follow the road rules at this corner making it dangerous for everyone. Cars stop at the stop sign on Breens Rd and think that it is okay to go straight through, while traffic is sitting in the middle of Harewood Rd waiting to turn right into Breens or Gardiners Rds. I have seen a lot of near misses and my husband was a witness to a bad accident where a man just pulled out into Harewood Rd hitting a female student’s car. He said he had been waiting too long to cross. I have noticed a decrease in traffic, I think people are avoiding the corner and going another way, I know I try to. I was really hoping something would have been done.

Burke announces intention to run in Harewood Ward By Andrew King THE HAREWOOD Ward now has three people set to vie for a seat, with Faimeh Burke throwing her hat into the ring for the upcoming city council election. Lady Burke originally said she would stand in the Waimairi Ward. However, she feels she can do more for her community in the Harewood Ward. She said part of the reason was because current city councillor Raf Manji was standing in the Waimairi Ward. “It was definitely a factor in my decision, but not the main one,” she said. Lady Burke said she had a strong bond with the area and felt it was the best ward for her to stand in. In the race for the Harewood seat, she will join ShirleyPapanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown and Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure and Rebuild Team value manager Rod Cameron. She has been a member of the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board for the past 12

BILINGUAL: Amiria and Matakaea Tikao helped supermarket customers celebrate Maori Language Week.

Pupils teach Te Reo

TWO PUPILS – one from Shirley Intermediate and the other from St Albans School – were the voices behind a supermarket initiative to celebrate Maori Language Week. Amiria Tikao, 12, and her younger sister Matakaea, 9, had their voices professionally recorded in a sound studio to help SuperValue and FreshChoice customers better understand the Maori language. The sisters were recorded pronouncing items such as apples, mushrooms, fish, milk, meat, kiwifruit and cheese, along with many others. Amiria said it was a fun project to be involved with. “It was really cool. It took about 45mins, so not very long . . . we got most of the words first time, which was good,” she said. years and said her passion and dedication to the area has not waived in the slightest. “I have close ties to community groups in this area and have pushed for a lot of change over my time on the board,” she

said. Fellow board member and current city councillor Jamie Gough is also standing for reelection to the city council. Cr Gough will stand in the Fendalton Ward.

Choice supermarkets then put posters up around their stores, with a QR code that customers could scan with their cell phone. The code led to a website where they could hear the two pupils correctly pronounce the word. Amiria said she had not yet tested out the posters, but she would think about going in later. SuperValue and FreshChoice brands manager Liz de Lange said that when the campaign was run last year, the QR codes were used thousands of times.

News Cheaper swimming ABOUT 1300 more children will be able to join Swim Safe classes thanks to a $40,000 funding increase. The boost was approved by city council as part of its annual plan for 2016/17. The funding will go towards the transport subsidy for children travelling by bus to city council swimming pools to take part in the programme. The city council also agreed to introduce a 25 per cent discount on entry fees to centres, such as Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre, for children of Community Services Card holders. The move aims to improve access to pools. The discount on entry fees will be introduced from October 1. However, the child entry fee for swimming at council pools is due to increase from $3.10 to $3.50 in October. City council staff are investigating how the cost can be kept as low as possible. City council acting head of recreation and sports David Bailey said the extra funding would help make Swim Safe more accessible, particularly for students at low decile schools.

CHEAPER ACCESS: The children of parents with a Community Services Card will be entitled to a 25 per cent discount on entry fees to facilities including Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre.

“Swimsafe is our foundation programme that every single child in the city should have access to,” Mr Bailey said. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said water safety is a vital skill that all children should have. “As New Zealanders, we have a responsibility to teach our children how to swim,” she said. “I think it is a fantastic idea but children need to continue to build their swimming skills after these classes.” Ms Carter said the pro-

gramme could tie in well with an incentive plan which the board had come up with to get people to use public transport, bike or walk to Jellie Park to reduce car parking issues. The board has suggested those who get to the facility without using a car should be eligible for discounts. HAVE YOUR SAY: Will these discounts encourage you to get you children into Swimsafe classes. Share your views with us. Email andrew.king@starmedia. kiwi

$10,000 donated to charity hospital SMILES WILL get a bit brighter for those whose dental care is unaffordable with the contribution of $10,000 by the Harcourts Foundation to the Canterbury Charity Hospital. The funds will be used to expand the hospital’s current oral care facilities into a larger dental surgery on Harewood Rd in Bishopdale. Canterbury Charity Hospital founder and surgeon Phil Bagshaw said the new oral surgery would increase the number of procedures and provide better dental training and options for the community. “Because we receive no Government assistance we are totally reliant on the support of hundreds of volunteers and financial assistance is like gold to us,” Mr Bagshaw said. Our People

Diving deep into new role as The Little Mermaid will be visiting The Court Theatre as part of her big above-sea experience. Played by Rebekah Head, she spoke to Georgia O’ConnorHarding about playing mythical Maori character Pania of the Reef’s mermaid grand-daughter, living out of a suitcase and what she hopes to do next. Hey Rebekah, how have the rehearsals been going? It has been a fast rehearsal process but it is a lot of fun and laughs. There are three actors. Unlike me, the other two actors get to do a lot of costume changes and swapping between other roles so I have the easy job in that sense. How come the little mermaid in this show is called PJ rather than the Princess Ariel we all know from Disney? The show, adapted by Alison Horsley, has incorporated the story of Pania of the Reef. There is a statue in Napier and she is part of Maori mythology. It is a New Zealand story. So PJ the mermaid is the grand-daughter of Pania of the Reef. It is definitely a more localised story. Have you grown up watching the Disney version of The Little Mermaid?

Definitely. Religiously. So how does it feel to be the mermaid of the show? It is very exciting and a bit nerve-racking because I think lots of people have The Little Mermaid in their head already. I am looking forward to creating my own version. Hopefully that is something people enjoy. How are you planning to portray yourself differently to The Little Mermaid we all know? Ariel was a large inspiration for the character but that is quite an American story so I have tried to make myself into more of a Kiwi mermaid. The wonderful work from the costume ladies has helped. The magnificent tails, with loads of sequins fellow actor Jane and I both wear, make it easy to take on the character. matic Art, are you performing full-time? I am trying to perform fulltime but it is a bit tricky because performing jobs only last a month or two. You rehearse them for two weeks and then

perform them for two weeks. I have been moving around Auckland, Christchurch and Hawke’s Bay in the last few months with various kids shows. Last year, I toured around New Zealand and Australia for a few months with

the New Zealand Playhouse. Would touring Australia be the main highlight since leaving NASDA? Definitely touring Australia for 10 months was a highlight. It was a crazy experience – I saw a lot of cool places. We started in Brisbane and went all the way across to Perth. We drove all the way, too. We performed high school and primary school shows. Our show for high schools was an adaptation of the Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Our primary school show was called Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk. They were 50-minute shows and they were performed three times a day. Do you ever get tired of the performing lifestyle? No, but the performing lifestyle is a specific one. I feel like I have spent the last two years living out of a suitcase, which perhaps isn’t everybody’s lifestyle choice, but I love it and won’t be stopping any time soon. What was NASDA like because I hear it is tough? I think any performing school is tough. You learn a lot about yourself because it is a very vulnerable craft to be doing.

What did you learn about yourself? I suppose you learn how you behave as a person with other people when you are under a lot of pressure. There are quite a lot of time pressures at NASDA. A lot of creative

It is a modern tale of The Little Mermaid. He is just a cool guy who lives in Christchurch. Jane Leonard will be playing Pania of the Reef and Pania’s evil sister Kelpie. Pania of the Reef is a New Zealand character but Kelpie the evil twin has more of a Cruella De Vil type of vibe. So what’s next? After this I am going to go travelling to Europe for a month. I am starting off in London and then going to Barcelona. I will be watching a lot of shows. I already have a lot booked at West End in London. I am going to Matilda The Musical, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which The Court Theatre is doing next year. The Little Mermaid will run at The Court Theatre from July 13-23.

art can’t be forced. You learn a lot when you are pushed to your limits. What do you enjoy about children’s shows compared to the other shows you have done? One of the most exciting things about children’s theatre is that children are the most honest audience members you are ever going to get. If they are not enjoying a show, they will let you know because they will start moving around. It is exciting hearing all the things yelled out as well. What do you think about the relaxed performance for children, including those with an Autism Spectrum Condition or learning disability? I think it is wonderful they are making this show accessible for people who wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing their children to the theatre. Children are always yelling out different things so I don’t think it would be too different for us. Tell me about the other

TOP TEAM: The Submarines show beat Sumner School 3-1 to take the year 7 and 8 water polo competition.

Submarines rise to top of competition BREENS Intermediate’s A grade water polo team, the Submarines, have won the year 7 and 8 competition at Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre recently. The final was played between Breens and Sumner was the culmination of a term of tough competition in the pool. The teams were unable to be separated during round robin play as they battled to a 2-2 draw. However, Breens coach Jono Collins said the final was a different story. “Sumner scored first but this

just seemed to energise the Submarines, showing heart and coming out on top in the end 3-1,” he said. “Some outstanding work in goal by Blake Richards saw a number of shots repelled, while dominating the pool Piper Spencer and Aiden Carson kept the opposition at bay, with Aiden scoring all three goals.” The Submarines have been together for two terms now and things look bright as they work towards the South Island tournament in Dunedin later this year.

THREE LITTLE PIGS: Room 2 pupils sung and danced their interpretation of for three little pigs and dressed up as pigs or wolves.

Fairy tales come to life HAREWOOD SCHOOL pupils performed at the Aurora Centre in Burnside to showcase what they had learnt in their literary study of fairy tales. One hundred and seventy two pupils were involved in the production called The Fairy Tale Fantasy and was written and directed by teachers Julie Argyle and Joanna Woods. School spokeswoman Angela Dini said the pupils focus during the term was dance and music and the classes worked hard towards integrating the two. “The synopsis of the story is children writing fairy tales as part of their literacy studies. They then had to gather infor-

There were whole school songs in between each class dance. Seven year-old Lilly Carline was a huge fan of the night. “It was exciting that we got to

perform on the stage,” she said. Ms Dini said all the children had a great time and the Aurora Centre was packed with parents, extended family and friends. Seven-year-old Emily Grins said she loved the colour and music. “I loved watching the other classes dance and sing,” she said.

UNIFORM CHANGE: Rangi Ruru students were able to find out what it was like to be a St Kent’s girl for a day.

Successful exchange for Rangi students Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students spent three days in Auckland as part of an exchange with St Kentigern Girls’ School. The year 7 and 8 students have recently returned after an actionpacked sport and cultural exchange. They participated in netball, basketball and indoor soccer against the St Kent girls foraging new friendships while battling on the court. They also shared a combined music performance, which was a

unique opportunity to share their learning of the Sasa, a Samoan dance, which they taught to their new friends. The girls also experienced being a St Kent’s girl for the morning attending classes in mathematics, cooking and art. A school spokeswoman said the students learnt a lot during their time away. “It was a truly varied learning experience, full of personal growth and development,” she said.

Trophies for musicians IT HAS been a hugely successful couple of weeks for Rangi Ruru Girls’ School music students. The school’s senior choir Resolutions won selection for the New Zealand Choral Federation Big Sing Finale. It is one of 24 schools that will attend the event in Dunedin in late August, and one of only four choirs from Christchurch. This follows two significant wins for Resolutions at the Big Sing regional competition in Christchurch, where they won best performance of a contemporary work and the award for the most outstanding recital from a girls’ choir. The school’s junior chorale was named joint winner of the most outstanding junior choir award at the same regional competition. Demonstrating incredible depth in music, Rangi Ruru also has two of only 12 groups selected for the national semifinals and finals of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, to be held in Auckland early next month. Graznya’s Girlz and From Russia with Love secured their places after their selection for the South Island regional finals. Graznya’s Girlz, made up of Grace McKenzie, Sarah Lawrence, Victoria Park and Rachel McSweeney, won the district contest, along with the Univer-

MATT DOOCEY

MP FOR WAIMAKARIRI CHAT WITH MATT I look forward to meeting you on Thursday, 14 July, from 7pm to 8pm, at the Belfast Rugby Club at my Keeping Connected Evening meeting. It’s about keeping connected through these night meetings, my caravan clinics or just living and working in the electorate with my family. Please drop in and take part. I enjoyed speaking at the Belfast Residents’ Association’s monthly meeting. The group are working hard to create a strong community and it was good to hear from them and explore ways we can work together. Forty students and a lot of questions were the order of the day when 40 students from Casebrook Intermediate recently took over my Parliamentary office during a visit to Parliament. The students attended Question Time before descending on my office for juice, fruit and biscuits. I arranged for Hon Nicky Wagner,

Minister of Customs, to visit and there were lots of questions about Customs and the work to stop crime at our borders. A productive meeting I facilitated for Casebrook residents with representatives from a range of agencies at the Papanui Club proved the value of working together. I am happy to assist in your area with any issue. Budget 16 and what’s in it to help local businesses is the focus of a visit by the Deputy Prime Minister when I host him in the electorate this month. I have arranged this visit to inform our local businesses on these new changes. Chatting to our over 65s in Belfast on Monday at my Super Seniors coffee morning once again resulted in some interesting issues being raised. I value these opportunities to hear from our seniors.

ACHIEVERS

HIGH ACHIEVER: Casebrook Intermediate’s Ella Mitchell (left) has been described as an exceptional leader, while Scott Janet, of St Andrew’s College, received an award for his fine qualities.

Natural young leaders By Andrew King SIX PILLARS of the north-west youth community have been honoured with Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Awards. This year’s nominations included stories of exceptional young leaders, talented Kapa Haka performers and students who volunteered their time to community groups. Scott Janet, of St Andrew’s

College; Krissy Epton, of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School; Pippa Gutry, of Paparoa Street School; Ella Mitchell, of Casebrook Intermediate; Jared Talenoa, of Breens Intermediate; and Hugh Fergusson, of Belfast School, all received awards. All six were noted for their natural ability to inspire those around them and bring out the best in their fellow students and themselves.

Sir Peter Blake Trust chief executive Shelley Campbell said the awards aimed to nurture and celebrate leadership in young people. “The qualities these children display – humility, humour, inclusiveness, positivity and a team approach – were all shown by Sir Peter himself,” she said. The awards span 460 schools from Northland to Bluff and celebrate year 5 to 8 leaders.

GOOD SORT: Papanui Primary School has given a shout-out to one of its fantastic volunteers, Carol Watson. Ms Watson has deep roots with the school, which was attended by her grandchildren and now her great grandchildren. Office administrator Lisa Brunel said she was a fantastic volunteer, who is always happy to give up her time. “From a regular slot on road patrol duty to taking reading groups, one on one reading, helping out in the classroom, testing spelling words, and assisting on class trips, she is a lovely person,” she said. “She is very positive, caring and always willing to help out with anything and everything. We are so grateful for everything she does for the pupils and school and we feel very lucky to have her.”

St Andrew’s finals charge By Gordon Findlater ST ANDREW’S College has re-ignited their finals hopes in this year’s UC Championship going into the school holidays. A 23-12 win over Burnside High School has moved STAC to sixth in the championship. With four rounds remaining in the competition, STAC went into Saturday’s game five points outside of the top four. STAC hosted Burnside which occupied fifth in the competition and had the opportunity to separate themselves from the chasing pack. Wins for third and fourth placed Shirley Boys’ High School and Nelson College at the weekend means that STAC will have to finish strong. It won’t be easy with two challenging away games to end the round robin. STAC will host bottom of the table Roncalli when the UC Championship resumes next weekend. They then face competition favourites Christchurch Boys’ High School in their penultimate game before a final round match with top of the table Christ’s College. St Bede’s College’s push for the finals is all but over. St Bede’s lost 15-24 to last

By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer I’VE SPENT much of the last week in the North Island. Firstly in Rotorua, where I visited the New Zealand Fire Service training facility for the first time. It is one extremely impressive complex, with full a number of buildings providing scenarios for training from cars to houses to commercial buildings, aircraft and ships. It’s a quantum leap from the bare concrete yard and tower that sufficed 35 years ago. While I was away, fire crews attended the normal range of incidents including, un-surprisingly, four kitchen fires. These ranged from an overcooked chicken breast in Dallington to a full house fire in Barbadoes St last Friday. I almost despair that the message, ‘keep looking while you’re

cooking’ continues to be ignored by many in our community. The result can be life shattering. One of the features of fine days at this time of year is that the sun travels low in the sky. This provided a shock for the owner of a house in Hillmorton returning home just before 5pm on Tuesday. She found two cushions quietly smouldering away in her lounge. The setting sun was reflecting perfectly from a small concave mirror on to the couch. In this case she was lucky. She came home just in time. Electric fans today have an oscillating feature that widens the dispersal of air. A fan against a wall that prevented this movement in St Martins last week was found to be overheating. Again just in time. But another thing that can ruin your life.

Tattoo removal specialists

offer discreet professional service

The TaTToo Removal Company is the first in Christchurch to specialise in the removal of tattoos, and removing clients’ unwanted tattoos is their sole focus. This family business has three technicians, male and female, who have undergone extensive training and are committed to ongoing professional training to maintain their skills. Coming from beauty, hairdressing and hospitality backgrounds, they love working with people and providing a friendly and totally professional service. for whatever reason you wish to remove your tattoo, the technicians provide a fast, effective, confidential and unprejudiced service in an exclusive, private environment. Whether you are having a full tattoo removal or lightening a tattoo for a cover-up with new art, during the initial consultation your technician will take the time to fully understand your needs, relevant medical history and the history of the tattoo in question so that you get the best service possible. The q-switch laser the technicians use removes tattoos effectively. The laser emits short, nanosecond energy pulses that penetrate the tissue and shatter particles of ink pigment into fragments, which are then eliminated via the lymphatic system. While there may be some slight discomfort, it is very brief. however, ice packs and numbing cream can be provided if required.

HealTH & BeauTY

Keeping TracK Of YOur HealTH Lets take a look at the new fitness sensation Fitbit. What is it and how does it work? Most importantly, how do we incorporate it into our fitness regime? Fitbit consists of a family of products designed to track every part of your day – including activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep – to help you stay motivated, and see how small steps make a big impact. There’s something for every taste, budget and technical requirement from the everyday category of wrist bands to performance-specific watches. All Fitbit products track steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes. All but the most basic Fitbit also track sleep patterns. At the performance end of the range you’ll also have access to things like heart rate and GPS tracking. All of the products feature wireless syncing and online and mobile tools, such as the Fitbit app to help track your exercise, sleep, hydration and food, and connect with friends. Seeing your progress can really help you realise what’s possible, and investing in a Fitbit may help to take you on the next step of your health and fitness journey. Fitbit was built on the premise that fitness is not just about gym time; it’s

about all the time. So, it can be a great addition to your fitness regime.

There are many things to consider when choosing a health and fitness regime to follow through with.

for example: • What type of exercise to choose: indoor, outdoor or a mixture of both? Running, walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, pilates, dancing, group fitness, a team sport, or something else? • Who to exercise with: just yourself, with a buddy, in a group, or to enlist the help of a personal trainer? • What nutrition guidelines to follow: enlist the help of a nutritionist, or just cut back on processed food, for example? • Balance: how will you ensure you get a good balance of enough rest and recovery as well as the right frequency, duration and intensity of exercise? • Motivation: how will you motivate yourself to get out the door in the first place?! Professional advice from a registered exercise professional should always be your first port of call. They can help get you set up with an appropriate personalised programme, help you with exercise techniques, and help you stay accountable to your goals. Once you’re in the swing of things you may find you want some extra assistance to ramp up your progress towards your goals. investing in a Fitbit could help you to achieve this, especially if you’re a ‘details’ person who likes to be well organised and able to measure progress from each and every workout. Similarly, if you find you’re in a bit of a rut and could do with a mini accountability ‘buddy’, then a Fitbit could be just the ticket.
